The interdisciplinary field of materials science, also commonly termed materials science and engineering, is the design and discovery of new materials, particularly solids. The intellectual origins of materials science stem from the Enlightenment , when researchers began to use analytical thinking from chemistry , physics , and engineering to understand ancient, phenomenological observations in metallurgy and mineralogy .

Wood is composed of long cells, in the axial direction, and thin cells in the radial and tangential directions. The smallest microstructural component of wood is called a microfibril. Microfibrils are bundles of cellulose chains covered first by hemicellulose and then by lignin. The long thin wood cells are composed of many layers of microfibrils. MSc Wood Materials Science is a programme aims at training professionals who understand the entire chain from wood biomass production to product development and innovation management.

[…] Professor Hu is also active in mentoring and outreach activities, including serving as an advisor to a Gemstone honors program team, hosting visits from high school students in Women In Engineering's LEAD Academy summer program, a partnership with Wheaton High School to create summer internships and new science lessons, and talking to visitors of all ages about materials science at Maryland Day. Hos Adlibris hittar du miljontals böcker och produkter inom the science and engineering of materials Vi har ett brett sortiment av böcker, garn, leksaker, pyssel, sällskapsspel, dekoration och mycket mer för en inspirerande vardag. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering has been pushing the limits of materials science since the day the department was founded fifty years ago and in so doing we defy conventional wisdom and discover new truths. Our engineers have been at the leading edge of developments in the field since the 1960s and remain there today. Materials Science and Engineering A provides an international medium for the publication of theoretical and experimental studies related to the load-bearing capacity of materials as influenced by their basic properties, processing history, microstructure and operating environment.

MSc Wood Materials Science is a programme aims at training professionals who understand the entire chain from wood biomass production to product development and innovation management. It focuses on developing new products by combining wood with other materials and by creating novel materials and products from wood fibres.

The journal publishes original articles on basic and applied research dealing with: -Wood material science with emphasis on: water-wood relations, wood durability, wood modification, Wood Material Science and Engineering's journal/conference profile on Publons, with 210 reviews by 104 reviewers - working with reviewers, publishers, institutions, and funding agencies to turn peer review into a measurable research output. In structural design, wood is commonly used for supports such as beams, joists and flooring, which are required to take considerable load.

At the Division of Wood Science and Engineering, we start with the needs of the wood processing industry and carry out research and provide education relating to the whole wood value chain from the final wood product all the way back to the forest.

Our goal is to expand the utilization of wood by improving material performance, adding novel functionalities for high- end technical applications and using the responsiveness of wood to humidity changes for new architectural elements. MSc Wood Materials Science is a two-year programme (120 ECTS) and upon graduation you will receive a globally recognised Master of Science degree certificate. MSc Wood Materials Science is a taught programme and during your studies you will benefit from lectures, exercises and excursions run by our professors and senior lecturers. Teaching in wood science and technology now forms part of the Fiber and Polymer Engineering major under the Master's Program in Chemical, Biochemical and Materials Engineering. It is continually being developed to ensure that students are given the most up-to-date education in this rapidly evolving field. One of Wood’s greatest strengths is engineering expertise. Recognized globally and throughout many industries for this capability, we tackle engineering projects ranging in complexity from simple to world class.

Our research activities focus on mechanics of fibrous and composite materials, wood mechanics, impact mechanics and fracture mechanics. We teach in the structural engineering and solid mechanics at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

It is easy to machine and abundantly available. It is light, yet strong and stiff and has a favorable strength-to-weight ratio. Best of all: It comes from a renewable source.
